Alongside the Mekong River

I crossed the Mekong River into Laos from Northern Thailand in November 2000. From there, I took a speedboat downriver to Louang Phrabang, and on to the capital by road.

The river itself is marvellous, surrounded by sandy banks and awesome mountains. Luang Prabang is a relaxing, quaint town, recently declared a World Heritage Site. Much more wonderful is Ven Vieng, with its magnificent natural setting, cool caves and pleasant riverfront. You can rent an innertube, take a pickup upriver and spend the afternoon floating back on the water! Nice. Here are a few photos I took during my time there.
